Whether it’s making an exceptional contribution through sport or in other facets of their life, to their community, a charity or cause; providing selfless assistance to others; or personally overcoming great adversity to compete, organisers want to hear their stories to help inspire others. Up to ten holiday packages are available to worthy individuals winners. The prize includes return flights to Abu Dhabi with the UAE’s award-winning national airline, Etihad Airways, plus four night’s accommodation at the five-star Khalidiya Palace Rayhaan by Rotana, as well as free entry into the event. Winners will experience one of the world’s finest triathlons and be treated to the emirate’s famed Arabian hospitality on a hosted excursion. “Sport has always been a powerful tool in overcoming adversity and pushing the limits of mind, body and soul. Over the last three years, we have been continuously inspired by amazing stories of bravery, determination and kindness from athletes who have taken part in Abu Dhabi. We want to officially recognise the sport’s true heroes this year, and hopefully motivate others to embrace positive change,” said Faisal Al Sheikh, Events Manager, Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi), which is behind the event. To enter, email inspire@abudhabitriathlon.com  by (27 January 2013). Now in its fourth year, Abu Dhabi is looking to attract more than 2,200 athletes from across the globe to compete, including many of the world’s top elites. Both the ‘short’ and the ‘sprint’ can be run as a team relay. Dubbed an ‘Instant Classic’ after its 2010 debut, the event has continued to attract the world’s best for a shot at one of the sport’s richest prizes. Highlights from past years have seen World Champions Chris ‘Macca’ McCormack and Craig ‘Crowie’ Alexander battle it out in the desert sun, legend Julie Dibens claim back-to-back titles and Rasmus Henning snatch the title in the closing metres from home favourite Faris Al Sultan. The year, organisers are promising the strongest elite field to date. Leading the charge is TEAM GB’s gold medal winning Olympic triathlete and back-to-back European Triathlon Union champion, Alistair Brownlee, who is looking to expand his competitive horizons. The 2013 Abu Dhabi International Triathlon will start with a sunrise swim in the Arabian Gulf’s shimmering turquoise waters off Abu Dhabi’s Blue Flagged public beach, before weaving through closed roads along the Corniche Beach, up to the spectacular Yas Island and around the Yas Marina Circuit – home to the annual Formula 1™ Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix - before returning to the heart of the UAE capital. Winners will need to be available to travel to the UAE between February 27th - March 4th and have the relevant visas and travel documents. Susie Hignett is moving fast

$

The 2013 Ironman 70.3 season kicks off this coming weekend in Pucon, Chile, but as we previewed HERE, for a significant number of British long course athletes 2013 will begin a week later at the Spec Savers Ironman 70.3 South Africa on 20th January. For British ladies, 2013 was quite a year on the long course scene; the retirement of Chrissie Wellington, the twin World Championship victories of Leanda Cave, Challenge Roth win to Rachel Joyce and the fantastic season of Lucy Gossage just a few highlights - with several others worthy of mention in the same context too (Lidbury, Swallow, Mullan, Abraham...). For that reason, it's perhaps not surprising that flying a little under those headlines is an athlete who, by normal standards, had a breakthrough year and yet for many, will perhaps be the best British long course athlete you've not heard of. Yet. And that is why I wanted to speak to Susie Hignett (www.susiehignett.com) - which I managed to do once she had negotiated airport security at Heathrow en route to South Africa for her first race of the season! Susie who? Susie Hignett only took part in her first triathlon less than 18 months ago. It was Ironman 70.3 Antwerp 2011, and she finished sixth. Overall that is, not in her age group, 10 minutes behind the winner, Ironman Florida 2010 and Ironman Brasil 2012 champion, Sofie Goos (BEL) - not a bad start. How did that happen? "My background was as a runner - 5km track and cross country primarily - where I ran internationally at European Under-23 Champs. I was struggling with injuries running and it was getting to the point where I thought I need to 'grow up', move on and get a job, a career etc as I was beginning to think the running could only go so far. And now I've ended up racing as a Pro triathlete! "Before 'giving up' running I thought I'd do a half marathon and that went quite well (1:15:45 at the EDF Energy Birmingham Half in 2010), but for how I ended up even doing a triathlon I blame my boyfriend. He was racing triathlons as an age group athlete, and yet he was doing more training hours than I was when trying to be an international runner. I was tagging along to events etc...and so I thought with the running 'career' sort of coming to an end, I'd give it a try." So why the decision to start with a 70.3 distance race - most triathletes would usually start short, and even with your running you were a 5km runner primarily? "That was really because when I looked at the distances, the swim - and I don't have any swim background - while slightly longer, is a significantly smaller percentage of the overall race than for a Sprint or Standard Distance race, so I thought it would perhaps be better for me. I was used to how to race (generally) from the running, but the biggest obstacle in going from a 15 minute race to approaching five hours is really the nutrition, endurance and the mental aspects - everything, the whole process of triathlon, has been and still is a huge learning curve for me." An interesting sponsor approach... Susie had an interesting and successful approach to sponsorship. "I emailed Planet X (www.planet-x-bikes.co.uk) before I did Antwerp in 2011 and sort of said something along the lines of 'I don't suppose you'd like to sponsor me... I haven't actually done a triathlon yet, but I know I can run and I think I'll be able to swim and bike so might have some potential, if you'd consider taking a chance on me?" For some reason they did (!) and it worked out well. They have been really good and have provided me with a road bike, a mountain bike and a time trial bike. With the the weather being bad, being able to use the mountain bike has been fantastic" The day job While she may race in the Pro ranks, Susie still works full-time, with a demanding job too. "I work for Volac a dairy nutrition company which supplies whey protein to the sports nutrition market. One of our brands is The Good Whey Co. (www.thegoodwhey.com) and this year we are releasing a new product to the market which is taking up a lot of my time, as I work as the Brand Manager. "Trying to fit in training around work, like anyone, is difficult and a lot of that has to be using the time to and from work efficiently - which means logistics (making sure the right kit, clean clothes or food is in the right place!!) is really important. That's a challenge, but using that those hours is quite time efficient." At least she doesn't have to worry about finding a recovery drink on arrival at the office with her job... "I tend to be out of the office at other locations every week, and so have to be pretty flexible in terms of training. I do have a plan of what sessions to do, but that has to be quite variable depending on work requirements and so I might often use those out of office times as rest days. The main thing is being consistent overall, not worrying too much about a rigid plan." Why South Africa? After winning The Vitruvian in 2011 after that Antwerp debut, Susie started 2012, as she will this year, at Ironman 70.3 South Africa (5th place). Why South Africa, and what do you think of the course? Well, my boyfriend Rob is South African, and we usually go out there every December or January anyway, so when I heard there was a race there... The course is quite tough - much of the bike course is on a closed main road/motorway and there is a gradual climb to the turnaround. I was expecting it to be much faster on the return than it felt on the way out (!), but that didn't seem to happen. It definitely a course you need to keep your concentration on as it isn't as easy as it seems. Triathlon Training versus Running training "Running will always be my favourite, but I actually enjoy all of the disciplines. I wasn't that excited about the thought of swimming, but its actually proven to be enjoyable even though its still somewhat alien. "I definitely train a lot more hours now than I ever did as a runner. Despite that, staying injury free is much easier - there is less running overall, but it's the reduction in the intense running that has really benefitted me. With 5k running, you really need to do those track sessions, the intense 200m/400m efforts in spikes. With that type of training not essential to a four/five hour race, and without running in spikes, my achilles is so much better." The Future? 2012 highlights for Susie were fifth places at 70.3 South Africa and 70.3 UK (Wimbleball), followed by second - to Olympic Champion Nicola Spirig - on her return to 70.3 Antwerp, exactly a year after her multisport debut. For 2013, she'll be sticking primarily to 70.3 events. "With working full-time and being busy with the product launch at work, I'll stick to 70.3 racing. I'll do the UK event again and possibly 5/6 halfs in total in the UK/Europe." How far can she go? 70.3 South Africa on 20th January won't answer that one fully, but it might well give a hint as to whether there is more - and how much more - to come from an athlete who has shown such potential in the 18 months since her debut in the sport. "Past performance is no guarantee of future results" is the usual disclaimer, but there are plenty of people out there who suspect we haven't seen the best of Susie Hignett just yet. Not 28 years of age until February, there is little reason to doubt those suggestions just yet. Keep an eye out for her during 2013. You can find out more about Susie via her website (www.susiehignett.com), and also follow her on Twitter @susiehignett.

Orca (www.orca.com) are excited to announce a new sponsorship agreement with 70.3 World Champion Sebastian Kienle. This agreement will reinforce the current presence of Orca in world-wide competitions, with top athletes such as MACCA, Andrew Starykowicz, Asa Lundström, Courtney Atkinson, Jodie Stimpson and Matt Sharp to name a few. "I'm very proud to work together with Orca in the future. A brand with a great history and a big future in Triathlon. In my wetsuit test after the 2012 season I was amazed by the performance of the wetsuits, this made my decision very easy” stated Sebastian Kienle after deciding to choose Orca as his brand. "We are happy to have Sebastian on board for a long partnership, not only for him to be an incredible athlete always fighting till the end, but as well for his extreme and deep interest in being supported by the best products to compete. The year pretty much ended with an Ironman 70.3 and, guess what... Yes, the cycle has started all over again and Ironman 70.3 Pucon kicks off 2013. Some pretty big names in the line-up but, absent an official start list, currently no identifiable Brits in the pro lists that have been circulating. Tipped to be there are the past three men's winners: Reinaldo Colucci (2010), Daniel Fontana (2011) and Guilherme Manocchio (2012) with competition five-time Ironman France winner, Marcel Zamora and multiple Ironman and Ironman 70.3 champions Luke McKenzie and Ben Hoffman. The women’s field includes two-time Pucon winner Heather Gollnick and 2012 Ironman New Orleans champion, Sarah Piampiano. Valentina Carvallo (CHI) finished second last year and looks to be the home favourite. Saturday will see the first of the three-course Winter Feast Duathlon series at Arisaig. The Appetiser features a 3.5k / 12.5k / 3.5k format which should shake out a few cobwebs. Duathlon racing on Sunday offers the choice of no mud, some mud or all mud. If you want road then it will be the MPH Winter Series race at Westhill, for a bit of mud your option is the John Flitch Memorial at Minnis Bay near Birchington where at least the opening run should be relatively mud-free. Those looking for the full wallow will be heading to the aptly-named Wadenhow Quadmire Duathlon organised by LincSquad near Oundle. Here you'll get the choice of a Quad (3 mile XC run, 2 mile kayak, 6 mile XC bike and a 1 mile XC run) or straight duathlon over a 2 mile / 6 mile / 2 mile route. FULL WEEKEND RACE LISTINGS

Weekend roundup: January 12-13

Here we are, not even two full weeks back into January and it's all systems go once again. OK, so it's just four duathlons and Ironman 70.3 Pucon on the schedule but that's just view on what's been going on. Events need to be timed and every year we have more (and more...) races so it's that time again when the other hat comes out of the cupboard and we start training new timers. Which means facing a very grumpy dog at 5am and freezing ones' fingers off beside a lake in Milton Keynes while enthusiastic recruits try to work out what seemed so easy in the classroom becomes a whole different beast when you're doing it for real! Spare a thought for them, they'll probably be timing you somewhere this season... Back to the warmth of the office to catch up on results and nice to see that No Fuss Events have their priorities totally sorted. There's an apology (albeit a pretty tongue-in-cheek one) on their website explaining why the results were a bit slow going online. Seems like the pub was a much more attractive proposition than slaving over a hot spreadsheet - I can heartily concur! In their Appetiser course of the Winter Feast Duathlon series Tim Brand took the win with Emma Atkinson the lead female. Full results are HERE. Sunday's season opener for the WTC's worldwide 70.3 series was held at Pucon in Chile. A close finish here: just three seconds between winner Reinaldo Colucci (BRA) and Daniel Fontana (ITA) after Colucci had started the run with a two minute advantage. No such drama in the women's field as home athlete Valentina Carvallo dominated the field. Sarah Piampiano (USA) was second. No official results yet on either the event site or IronmanLive. We don't yet have detailled results from the John Flitch Memorial Duathlon but the organisers did send through the top three man and women. The winning team was Gary Godden and Stuart McLeod. Pos Male Female 1 Keir Williams Barbara Hutton 2 Steven Groom Liz King 3 Peter Link Delphi Lever The MPH Winter Series Duathlon at Westhill was postponed until February 10th due to warnings of adverse weather over the weekend. Will Clarke: learning to go long

Last week we chatted to the fast improving British 'newcomer' Susie Hignett, ahead of this weekend's Ironman 70.3 South Africa. Another British athlete racing in Buffalo City is at the other end of the triathlon professional experience scale - yet, he's actually less familiar with 70.3 racing than Susie... I last spoke to Will Clarke in April last year when he was hoping to be the 'third man' on the London 2012 Team GB Triathlon team alongside the Brownlee brothers. As we now know, that didn't work out for Will as Stuart Hayes was the final athlete selected. After finishing the 2012 season, Will has now turned his attentions and future towards longer distance, non-drafting racing. That next stage of his career starts this Sunday, and I had a quick chat to Will to get his thoughts on the career changes he has made and on what the future holds. "I believe I've got the legs to one day challenge for the win in Kona..." Will, it’s the start of a new year and the beginning of a new direction in your racing – does it feel a bit like your first weeks at a new school, finding your way around?! Yea it does. Racing Triathlon comes so naturally to me now, I've got a lot of experience built up from the years but now I find I'm having to really think about what I'm doing. All these new aspects like how my bike is set up, which has been a struggle, as it is for everyone I can imagine. What tyres I'm using, pacing, my nutrition strategy, the non-drafting rule, where to find my shoes! I'm a novice again! Lots of things must have changed for you – the move away from ITU style racing, differences in training, possibly training partners and more – how are you finding that transition? Have you been able to put the non-selection for the Olympics behind you now and focus on the next stage of your career? Yea. I've really made some big changes this year with everything, but I'm confident it's the right changes. I've thought about it for a long time and Clare and I have done our homework on this. I think I'm really suited to this type of racing, I've got the engine for it and after the disappointment with Olympic Selection it was an easy decision in the end for me. I've done the whole Olympic thing, it was great, London would obviously have been better but Rio will be the same as Beijing. Unless you win a medal nothing will change and to be honest I can't run 29:06 to win like Alistair so I'm not willing to give another four years to the cause! I believe I've got the legs to one day challenge for the win in Kona though so I'm putting my eggs in that basket and I think it'll be a lot of fun along the way. One of the things that’s also changed is your coach (Mat Steinmetz) – what goes into that sort of decision, and why did you decide to take on Matt for that role? I obviously know who Mat is because he's the coach of Craig Alexander and Mirinda Carfrae. He must know what he's talking about, right? So, I got hold of him and we had some conversations over Skype and I liked what I was hearing so we started working together. He specialises in my weaknesses, he's a bike set up guru, he likes to analyse the equipment choices and he's good with the scientific part of racing like blood analysis, altitude work etc. He's living in Boulder so I'll be working with him closer during the summer. I guess at the moment we're just scratching the surface because I'm still putting in the work in South Africa, so it's just been a Skype and email relationship so far. I'm liking his training ideas so far though and I expect we'll really start to make some big improvements in April onwards. Do you have an outline plan/schedule for events for the year – with Mat being US-based, does that mean you will be spending a fair bit of time across the Atlantic? I'm racing South Africa 70.3 this coming weekend. It's a bit of a British showdown as well between Tim Don, Mark Threlfall and myself plus many others on the start line. We've never raced each other over this kind of racing so will be really interesting (and tough, they're in great shape). I'm then finishing off my winter out here before going to Boulder for some racing and training. I'm hitting up Galveston and St Croix 70.3's. before coming home for some Bundesliga racing and UK 70.3 which is an important one for me. Then back over the pond for a big preparation block leading into Las Vegas 70.3 World Champs and also Des Moines. I'm sure there will be other racing in there but we're not 100% sure on what fits in just yet. You are not completely new to 70.3 racing – I remember you did, from memory, California 70.3 about three years ago – is there anything from that race you can remember which you can apply to your training/approach now? That race was funny, I was actually in decent shape for it. I was swimming and running fast as well as hitting some big numbers in the lab on the bike. However I had zero experience and didn't have a clue about time trial riding and just how important bike set up was. I did it on a road bike with aero bar extensions and I got totally smashed by the boys at the front. 7-10 mins smashed...I really underestimated it and it showed! I ran fast and got through to seventh just out-sprinting Sylvain Sudrie for the last bit of prize money, but it was too late for that business! This time I'm better prepared for the bike, I'm much more aware of all the aspects of time-trialling and my training has been all about this distance so I hope it's a much different story! Any news on the sponsorship front? Also, how has the transition gone to riding a time-trial style bike (and what will you be riding?!) after years in the draft-legal racing? I've just picked up a new title sponsor I'm really pleased with, Champion System (www.champ-sys.co.uk). They make really popular custom made racing and training kit. I was able to send them my design with all the logos and they got the garments out to me recently. I've always wanted to design my own cycling kit so excited to use it now! I also started working with Huub Wetsuits and I'm riding Focus Bikes with Shimano wheels this year. Really buzzing to try out Shimano Di2 as well for the first time!

No British Pro's on the start list this year (though Ali Hollington is a 'Brit turned Kiwi!), but any race that features two-time Ironman World Champion Chris McCormack is always going to draw headlines. Saturday's Challenge Wanaka in New Zealand is the first iron-distance event of the year, and now in it's sixth year will see an Aussie/Kiwi battle at the front of the field. Jamie Whyte (NZL) won in 2011 and was second last year, so will have his eyes on the scalp of Macca and a return to the top step of the podium. Gina Crawford and Joanna Lawn are the star ladies of New Zealand long course racing and are likely to have a close batte all day for the win. This weekend Challenge Wanaka will host a record 1,500 long course triathletes as part of the week-long triathlon festival that has attracted world champions and Olympians. The highlight in the flagship Challenge Wanaka race on 19 January is the presence of four-times world champion, Chris ‘Macca' McCormack, one of the sport's great athletes with over 200 victories to his name and his eye on a new course record at his first New Zealand long distance race. Determined to stop him in his tracks is a strong men's field that includes former Duathlon World Champion, Leon Griffin (AUS), Challenge Wanaka 2011 champion, Jamie Whyte (NZL) and four-times iron distance champion Bryan Rhodes (NZL). The women's race will see an exciting dual between New Zealand's top two long course triathletes, Gina Crawford and Joanna Lawn. Crawford has won Challenge Wanaka four times and is going for a fifth, Lawn has won Ironman New Zealand seven time and has turned her sights to the tough, honest course of Wanaka for the first time. They are joined by Australian Kate Bevilaqua who has multiple long distance titles to her name, along with Kiwis Candice Hammond and Julia Grant, both of whom are regular podium finishers. New Zealand Olympians Kate McIlroy and Nicky Samuels are also competing in the relay teams section, along with Youth Olympic gold medallist, Aaron Barclay. Challenge Wanaka has become renowned as a bucket-list race for triathletes from all over the world with its unique location on the edge of the TeWahipounamu World Heritage Area and Mt Aspiring National Park, earning the reputation of the world's most scenic long distance triathlon. Featuring a 3.8km swim in the crystal waters of Lake Wanaka, a 180km cycle through the foothills of the Southern Alps and a 42.2 off-road run, the course is as honest as it is spectacular. Challenge Wanaka Triathlon Festival is the largest in New Zealand with over 2,000 athletes of all ages and abilities taking part during the week-long celebration of sport. The action started on Sunday 13 January with the Puzzling World Junior Challenge Wanaka for children aged 6-15 followed by the Radio Wanaka Charity Fun Run/Walk on Monday evening. All proceeds will go to the Wanaka Land SAR. The Contact Tri Series comes to town on Friday 18 January featuring some of the country's top sprint triathletes and then all eyes are on the flagship Challenge Wanaka event on Saturday 19 January, together with the Lake Wanaka Half, starting at 6.30am. Live TV Internet coverage is available through Challenge Wanaka Live at www.challenge-wanaka.com from 6.30am New Zealand time on 19 January. Challenge Wanaka is part of the global Challenge Family series that features 18 events worldwide in Germany, France, Spain, Denmark, Holland, Austria, UK, Italy, Canada, Thailand and Taiwan as well as New Zealand.
