World AG Champs Richard Shephard and Claire Steels win Clumber Park Duathlon Matthew Bottrill's progress continues with second place - and another bike course record The Clumber Park Duathlon, organised by One Step Beyond Events on Saturday welcomed quality fields to both the Standard and Sprint distance races as both offered qualification places to GB Age-Group World and/or European Championship events. The Standard Distance race offered both World (2016) and European (2017) places, while the Sprint Distance provided opportunity to secure a place in the team for the 2017 European Championships. Following an Age-Group win and sixth place overall at the Dambuster Duathlon recently (report on that HERE), it was also another step on the 'time trial to tri(du)athlon' transition of multiple National TT Champion Matthew Bottrill. After an opening run which would have left him in approximately 70th position, a bike course record (53:13, more than four and half minutes faster than anyone else on a day where barely a hanful of athletes broke the hour), reversed all of that and more - but it was 2014 ITU World Champion (35-39), Richard Shephard who was able to take the win on the second run, where his 17:21 (versus 20:08), was enough to reach the line 1:17 clear of the fast-riding Bottrill. Matt told us "Really happy with this weekend result, second overall. Running felt much more fluid. So I'm making progress and smashed the bike course record by over four minutes. I'm really happy with today's result I feel like I'm starting to make the transition now. I know there's a long way to go but I'm looking forward to my first triathlon next Sunday at East Leake". Claire Steels - also a World Champion herself last year in Adelaide - was a clear winner in the women's Standard distance, with the fastest splits in all three disciplines. 70.3 Monterrey three-peat win for Tim Don

Tin Don and Heather Wurtele take the honours in Mexico Adding to wins in 2014 and 2015, Great Britain's Tim Don took his third consecutive win at Ironman 70.3 Monterrey on Sunday, in Mexico. Close to the leading group in the swim which was headed by Matt Chrabot (USA), the bike leg in Monterrey saw little in the way of separating the front end of the field either, with seven athletes (Sylvain Sudire (FRA), Don, Chrabot, Trevor Wurtele (CAN), Ben Hoffman (USA), Drew Scott (USA) and Kevin Colling (USA)) all arrive at T2 separated by just 41 seconds. Also part of that leading group through most of the ride, Stuart Hayes has lost time in the final section to reach transition three minutes in arrears. With a 28:56 (road) open 10km time on his C.V., Don has always been a superb runner and he closed out the race with a 1:12:46 half marathon for exactly one minute over second place Wurtele at the finish line. Chrabot just got the better of Sudri for the final podium spot. I guess I was kind of Happy at the end. #enjoyeverypodium 🏁X3 #IM703MTY #happyboy 😀 https://t.co/0ag0yewAXm— Tim Don (@trithedon) March 20, 2016 It was a good day for the family Wurtele, as Trevor's wife Heather Wurtele went one better in the women's race to take top spot on the podium. Her healthy four minute victory margin over a talented field which included three-time Ironman World Champion Mirinda Carfrae owed much to a blistering 2:16:49 bike leg that quickly turned her 90 second swim deficit into a three minute lead at T2. A 1:22:09 run split left little scope for others to close her down. Carfrae (who finished third), gained slightly with a 1:20:48, but she was still three minutes down on Camilla Pedersen (DEN) and almost seven on Wurtele. Brits Emma Pallant and Emma-Kate Lidbury finished sixth and eight respectively, both swimming/cycling/running within seconds of each other, the biggest difference being that Pallant spent over one minute less in transition in total. With $1,250 for sixth and $500 for eighth, they could have been quite costly. Ironman 70.3 Monterrey, Mexico - Sunday 20th March 2016 1.9km / 90km / 21.1km Pos Men Women 1st Tim Don (GBR) 3:42:53 Heather Wurtele (CAN) 4:08:19 2nd Trevor Wurtele (CAN) 3:43:53 Camilla Pedersen (DEN) 4:12:05 3rd Matt Chrabot (USA) 3:44:37 Mirinda Carfrae (AUS) 4:15:11 13th - Stuart Hayes (3:56:39) 16th - Robert Wade (IRL) - 4:00:08 19th - Tim Hancock (4:11:47) 6th - Emma Pallant (4:25:49) 8th - Emma-Kate Lidbury (4:27:15) 12th - Frankie Sanjana (4:39:58)

Triathlon pioneer Julian Jenkinson dies

Exceptionally sad news today, brought to our attention from Richard Iles, Race Director of RaceNewForest events. “Very sad to hear the awful news this weekend that UK Ironman Legend Julian Jenkinson suffered a fatal heart attack whilst out training. Jules was a great friend & one of the pioneers of triathlon in the New Forest, one of the founding members of Southampton Tri Club. Our thoughts go to Erica & family & friends.” Julian Jenkinson really was one of the pioneers and exceptional athletes during the development of the sport in this country from the early 90s. If you’ve been around a long time (as we have here, long before Tri247 - indeed, long before the internet World Wide Web even existed), then Julian’s regular (and amusing) column’s in 220 Magazine are part of the fabric of our history. While Cycling Weekly has Dr Hutch now, ‘we’ had Dr Julian Jenkinson. A multiple winner of ‘The Longest Day’ - for many years the only iron-distance race within the UK - Julian represented Great Britain internationally at Elite level. In 1995 he finished fifth at the European Iron-Distance Championships in Detern, Germany: "physically I had the best race of my life. This coincided with undoubtedly the fastest ironman course in the world on a cool deathly calm day that time trialists dream about". Julian’s time that day (8:15:21), stood as the British record for 13 years. Even now, only four British athletes (Paul Amey, Tom Lowe, Joe Skipper and Stephen Bayliss), have since recorded faster iron-distance times. British Male Iron Distance Record Progression After his triathlon career, Julian excelled on the domestic cycling time trial scene. In 2010 Julian won the Best British All-Rounder (BBAR) title, for the fastest average speeds over 50mile, 100mile and 12-hour TT’s during the season. That year Julian also won the National 12-Hour Champs (covering 292.49 miles), and was second in the ‘100’ Champs (3:38:54). Plenty of other fast times and medals along the way too. Sincere condolences from everyone at Tri247 to the family and friends of Julian Jenkinson.

Once again, the race has linked up with PowerBar (www.powerbar.eu), and the event have announced which products will be provided during the event. Here are the details. (For more on the EDF Alpe d'Huez Triathlon, visit our dedicated section). PowerBar: nutrition partner of the EDF Alpe d'Huez Triathlon 2016 PowerBar repeats its collaboration with the Alpe d'Huez Triathlon We are very honored to renew our partnership with PowerBar for the 2016 edition. To be trusted by such a prestigious brand is a recognition of which we are very proud. It is our responsability to supply the triathletes with great quality nutrition products. The weather may be very hot at the end of July in our mountains and our event is a tough one meaning that triathletes require a correct energy load and optimal hydration. PowerBar Isoactive drink (Orange): It is a classic. Before and during the effort, the isotonic drink by PowerBar will allow you to replace the mineral salts lost thanks to its five electrolytes formula (sodium, potasium, calcium, magnesium, chloride). It also contains a mixture of carbohydrates C2Max (scientifically proved efficiency), glucose and fructose. Remember: hydration has a direct impact on you mental and physical performance. PowerGel Original: It is a quality refence gel for professional athletes since 1996. And it is so remarkable because of its scientifically developed combination of carbohydrates specially designed for intense efforts. Furthermore, it contains sodium, which is the main mineral salt lost by the perspiration. Energize Bar: The PowerBar Energize provides carbohydrates before and during the race. Just like PowerGel and Isoactive, it contains the special combination of carbohydrates, C2Max. Moreover, it provides some magnesium in order to stimulate the energy metabolism. We invite you to enjoy these three products before the event and in order to get used to their flavors and textures, and to avoid any surprise on the D-day.

Dates confirmed for Penticton 2017 ITU Multisport World Championship Festival The International Triathlon Union (ITU) is pleased to confirm dates for the Penticton 2017 ITU Multisport World Championship Festival. The 10-day event, which will see 5,000 atheltes compete in four separate World Championships – duathlon, aquathlon, cross triathlon and long distance triathlon – will be held from August 18-27. Penticton, B.C. (Canada) has won a bid to host the first edition of the Multisport World Championships. "For the first time, athletes can compete in more than one Multisport World Championship race in one convenient location, which is an idea we've had a great response to both from cities and from age group athletes," said ITU President and IOC Member Marisol Casado. "Penticton will set the stage for the future of the event. We are very confident in the team's ability to deliver an exceptional experience that will set the bar of this festival very high." "There is no better place than Penticton for a multisport championship on this scale," said Michael Brown, Executive Director, Penticton 2017. "The Okanagan has been hosting world-class triathlons for more than 30 years, and this event will cement the region's reputation as a premier global destination for training and racing." The international significance of Penticton 2017 means the region will welcome up to 5,000 athletes, thousands of spectators, media and members of the global triathlon family. The economic benefit to the region is expected to be in the millions. Brown's team is working on a list of events that the community can participate in, and hopes to enlist the famous Penticton Volunteer Army to assist with the event (s). All four competitions will start and finish in the heart of Penticton, with the epicenter being along the beachfront of Okanagan Lake and Okanagan Lake Park. The spectator friendly courses will feature a variety of terrain and include some of the area's many vistas, wineries and landmarks, as well the downtown area, with a stadium finish at each race. In addition to the aquathlon, duathlon, cross triathlon and long distance triathlon World Championship races, participants will be treated to concerts, an athletes village, street dance, race expo, parade of nations, kids races and awards presentations; all of these events adding to the overall atmosphere of the festival. "Penticton is special because of the long history of triathlon with the community. The people and the tradition of volunteerism in and support of sport," says Les Pereira, President of Triathlon Canada. "We are very proud to be the first country to host this event. The sport of triathlon has its roots deeply entrenched in North America and much of it's soul is in Canada." Brown also owns and organizes the Challenge Penticton triathlon each year. This means the local organizing team is familiar with the area, can leverage existing relationships and partnerships, and can use this year's Challenge Penticton as a test event for the 2017 festival. Michelle Dillon to race British Elite Champs

Former World Champion to race alongside current World Champion at Windsor Duathlon She was World Duathlon Champion in 2005, World Triathlon Championship Bronze medal winner in 2002 (Cancun, Mexico) and picked up plenty of other medals along the way - before retiring from triathlon in 2008 following major surgey (double fusion), on her back. And now... two-time Olympian Michelle Dillon, now 42, is going to be racing the British Elite Duathlon Chamionships at the Windsor Duathlon (www.windsorduathlon.com) on Sunday 3rd April. More used to coaching the current World Champion, Emma Pallant, and husband Stuart Hayes these days under her 'Team Dillon' squad, Michelle has been inspired to race again: "I think we all need goals, and instead of going out and just running everyday to keep fit, I decided that whilst I was in Spain coaching I would do a few bike rides with Stu and Emma and I started to really enjoy it. That lead me to start doing the hard hilly bike sessions every Saturday with them and I was doing well. So I enjoyed going back to hurt myself each week on that particular session and the fitness was getting better. Trust me its not easy keeping up with these two but I do try, and came off each session smiling so I must of enjoyed it! I also want to inspire others that may have had back problems, fusion of the spine or something similar. On her expectations for the race? "I really don’t know what to expect, maybe just to finish in the top half of the field would be great." Read Michelle's full blog on why she has decided to race HERE.

Karl Shaw wins XTERRA Costa Rica

British athlete beats World Champion at XTERRA Costa Rica As well as Tim Don adding another first quarter British international podium this past weekened (in Monterrey), there was another win at XTERRA Costa Rica. Karl Shaw (brother of Asa, who was runner-up at the 2013 XTERRA World's) took the win in a race which saw the podium positions separated by just 26 seconds. In the process, a late surge on the run allowed him to reach the tape 17 seconds clear of reigning XTERRA World Champion Josiah Middaugh. (Race report courtesy of Trey Garman / XTERRA Planet). KARL SHAW, MYRIAM GUILLOT-BOISSET WIN XTERRA COSTA RICA Karl Shaw from Great Britain and Myriam Guillot-Boisset from France won the elite races at the inaugural XTERRA Pan American Tour season-opener on an amazing "Pura Vida" morning in Costa Rica on Sunday, March 20. It's the first career XTERRA win for Shaw, who had a one-minute lead out of the swim, was seconds in front of last year's XTERRA Costa Rica Champion Rom Akerson and reigning XTERRA World Champion Josiah Middaugh coming off the bike, and responded to a late surge from Middaugh with one of his own in the deep sand just 2K from the finish to take the tape in 2:05:52. Middaugh came in 17 seconds later, followed closely by Akerson 9 seconds after that. It was one of the closest 1-2-3 finishes in the sports history. "I would've been happy with 3rd so to come away with the win is great, especially mentally to start the season," said Shaw, who was racing his first XTERRA in four years. "I've just come off 2-3 months of good training, and two weeks of camp here in Costa Rica with my friends, so it's just been really good. Costa Rica is a lovely country, very good course, hot, and hard on the legs. It's a beautiful place and I'll be back next year to defend the title." Shaw's brother Asa, who was the runner-up at XTERRA Worlds three years ago, was on-site to see the big win and even though Karl had a good lead out of the swim Asa wasn't sure it was enough. It turned out that when Akerson and Francois Carloni caught up with Shaw on the bike the three starting working together and effectively held-off the world champ. For Middaugh, who escaped a winter snowstorm in Colorado on Wednesday only to be greeted by the warm air of the Province of Guanacaste on Thursday, it wasn't so much the humidity but rather a late crash on the last downhill of the bike that might've been the difference. "I had caught Francois and closed to about five seconds behind Rom and Karl, but after that crash it was more like 30 seconds. It was tough racing today," said Middaugh. "Every year its hard here. I thought I was feeling a little more fit and would have had an easier time catching that front group on the bike. I came close but not quite close enough." Akerson, who lives nearby on the beach, was set on defending his title and knew that keeping Middaugh behind him on the bike would give him his best shot. "It's just a matter of time before beast mode breaks out with Josiah," said Akerson. "I gave it all I had to keep him behind me but couldn't do it." When asked if he was surprised by Shaw's strong showing, Middaugh replied, "I was surprised with Karl. I knew he was strong on the bike but I didn't know he would be that strong on the mountain bike, but he was. He did a very smart race, and they were able to work together and he raced really strong. It was hot this year, a little dryer and a little faster and I was really worried about the heat but it seemed okay. I felt I managed it okay." This is the third straight runner-up for Middaugh in Costa Rica, and when reminded that it took him 15 years to win Worlds, he said "Well, you don't learn anything from winning and second keeps you hungry so I'll be back." Next stop for Middaugh is XTERRA Argentina, the 2nd stop on the Pan America Tour, this weekend. Last year's XTERRA European Tour runner-up Francois Carloni finished 4th, followed by Frederico Venegas from Costa Rica in 5th and Greg Schott from the USA, racing his first pro race, in 6th.EMOTIONAL WIN FOR GUILLOT Two years ago here in Costa Rica Myriam Guillot-Boisset was on top of the world having just won the adventure racing world championship, and to make it even better her Dad was in Costa Rica with her to see it happen. And then sadness set in… "My Dad was very sick when he came here, and when he took the flight to go back home he passed away," said Guillot, with tears in her eyes. "It was the last time I saw him, here in Costa Rica, and the first time I've been back since. This one is for him. I thought of him out there today. We were at the same place." Guillot-Boisset said she could feel her Dad with her during the race and it made her confident, and happy. "So happy, and I'm sorry to share this, normally I keep it to myself, but it's overwhelming right now" Guillot-Boisset, who won XTERRA Malaysia and was 4th at XTERRA Worlds last year, dominated the women's elite race. She came out of the water together with Kara LaPoint from the U.S. and Sabrina Gobbo from Brazil, and the three of them caught IM star Cait Snow early on the bike. Guillot-Boisset then pulled away from the rest of the field and finished strong in 2:34:48, nearly 15 minutes ahead of LaPoint in 2nd, and Gobbo in third. She will now head to Argentina in her chase to win the XTERRA Pan American Tour title this season. "The race today was better than I expected," said Guillot-Boisset. "It was an amazing swim, everybody would dream to swim here and the run is really exciting. I enjoyed the course, it has so much variety and it's such a good way to experience Costa Rica." For LaPoint, the adventure of racing in Costa Rica mixed with a career-best runner-up performance left her with a great big smile. "It feels amazing … now that I'm not suffering," said LaPoint. "The last two miles of the run was one of the hardest things I've ever done. I was so tired, it was so hot, and I knew Sabrina was doing great behind me. Having to run on the sand was such a challenge. I did everything I wanted to do here today and I'm very happy with that." LaPoint was 2nd out of the water "but 4th out of transition, doh!" but was able to get past Gobbo and Snow and rode in 2nd until about mile 15 when Gobbo passed her back and came into transition 2nd. LaPoint then regained the 2nd position at about mile two of the run and held on until the finish. "It's been a really fun experience. A new race, a new country, everything was new. The water was great, course was awesome, everything was neat. It's been a blast to be here. I was literally thinking to myself in Spanish the whole race," said LaPoint, who impressively also did her TV interviews in Spanish. Gobbo said she tried to go with LaPoint when she passed her on the run, but "she was running really fast and I couldn't keep up." Snow finished smiling in fourth in her XTERRA debut, and said "XTERRA is awesome, just a hair-bit dirtier than Ironman. I had a blast, and even though I came off the bike so many times, I was able to laugh about it and that is the key." Caroline Colonna posted a career-best 5th place showing, and Rebecca Blatt followed in sixth. Pos Men Women 1st Karl Shaw (GBR) 2:05:53 Miriam Guillot-Boisset (FRA) 2:34:49 2nd Josiah Middaugh (USA) 2:06:10 Kara Lapoint (USA) 2:49:21 3rd Rom Akerson (CRC) 2:06:19 Sabrina Koester (BRA) 2:51:30

Review: VIRUS Performance LS Top

After conquering his first Ironman last year, Paul Hayward has managed to conquer his 'Ironman blues' and get back into training for 2016. As he's not been able to face a return to the turbo, getting outside on the bike has been key - and that meant selecting some winter kit to keep him toasty. In this piece, Paul tests a versatile jacket from a new brand to us, Virus Performance UK (www.virusperformance.co.uk). Their 'Men's Stay Warm Functional Fit Long Sleeve 1/2 Zip Top With Thumb Hole' (at the time of writing, available for a very reasonable £55), may not be the most efficiently titled garment we've ever featured...but, how did it perform? Rather well actually. After a long year of training and racing in 2015, one thing scared me - returning back to the garage and hitting the turbo for months on end. Although vital to cycling training - I am led to believe that some triathletes even swear by it until race day - I just could not go back into the darkness of the “pleasure chamber” and there was only one real option; toughen up and get a winter bike. The purchase of the winter bike was the easy part though; the issue is the winter kit to keep you warm throughout your rides. With a host of options available for a jacket, with prices ranging from £30 to £200, I was literally lost with the options open to me. I needed something that would keep me warm, dry and comfortable. This appeared to be no easy task and a possibly expensive mistake to make. Virus Performance UK (www.virusperformance.co.uk) has been causing waves in Obstacle Course Racing with their Performance Series, and the Stay Warm Series caught my eye not, only stylistically but functionally. The Functional Fit Long Sleeve ½ Zip Top ('the jacket') promised: a reflective jacket that gives a tailored fit for a full-range motion of activities; importantly offering increased visibility in poor light; coffee charcoal fabric which allows athletes to stay warm, dry and comfortable; and quick dry technology that wicks away moisture and drys. On closer inspection the real unique selling point appeared to be the fabric made out of coffee charcoal which acted as a natural heating element, that not only keeps you dry but promised to increase the surface temperature whilst you ride. With cycling conditions offering single figures in the mornings or evenings, if I was lucky, and a 21 mile commute as the target the jacket appeared to tick the right boxes. First inspection As first impressions go, aesthetically, I could not fail to be impressed. The jacket was wrapped up beautifully and on feeling the fabric, it was smooth to the touch and soft. The fit felt natural and unlike some cycling jackets it did not feel restrictive or tight. Surprisingly, it does not benefit from a full zip: but yet the half zip works really well and it exudes comfort when you wear it. Importantly it does not look out of sync next to more household cycling brands and, if anything, competes aesthetically with them. The commute / winter rides The tests comprised of a series of short 9-mile blasts to a 21-mile commute to work once a week, at different times of the day, to push it through variable temperatures. Although the main test would consist of a 21-mile ride across Berkshire, with 741 foot of gain, some beautiful countryside views and unforgiving wind, it was important that the jacket would perform at all times as I wanted an all-purpose option. Over the course of the last eight weeks I have cycled through strong winds, conditions below freezing (that made the water in my water bottle freeze), and the occasional glimmer of sun. The weather has not played fair at times and as the sun came up, or went down, it was bitter, cold and nasty. This being said the jacket has lapped up all of these challenges and impressively managed to keep me warm, comfortable and breathing steadily at all times. The weather had been horrendous at points and my legs had been so cold, but the jacket ensured that my chest and arms remained toasty as the heat was retained. Importantly, I did not overheat and over the course of the 21 miles the jacket's performance was superb. I did not feel cold at all and despite the conditions the commute was achievable, enjoyable and more importantly comfortable. To give some context to how warm the jacket is, I rode five miles with my girlfriend who wore a thermal vest and another brand's jacket in the middle of the day. At a number of points during the ride she complained about how cold it was, as she was visibly shaking at the traffic lights or when we stopped still, but yet I felt completely 'cool' in just the jacket and a normal t-shirt underneath. It felt like I was cheating, as the jacket provides warmth and comfort despite the weather that ensured that I remained able to cycle easily. I entered this test slightly hesitant that the jacket would not deliver and I would be cold during my rides or commute. I could not have been more wrong, the jacket performed exceptionally and I was shocked at just how it delivered to ensure that I was warm throughout my journeys. One point I should make though, in order that it does not come as a surprise, is that the jacket does not have any pouches on the back or pockets. However, a fuel bag/bento box on the bike resolves this issue and this should not detract from what a great piece of kit this is. It would have been easy to go for a more well-known name for my commute, however by taking a risk on an upcoming brand I found a real gem. The only real question I ask myself is why I did not opt for the leggings to go with it? More information on Virus Performance UK's “Stay Warm” series can be found HERE. Ride to Rio for Jane Tomlinson Appeal

Team to pay tribute to inspirational Jane Tomlinson by riding to Rio! A decade ago, the late amateur athlete Jane Tomlinson CBE was about to embark on her biggest ever challenge, an exhausting 4,200-mile ride across America. Inspired by her remarkable courage, this summer, Jane's husband Mike will take on his own momentous challenge - by cycling over 3,000 miles from the UK to Brazil. Mike Tomlinson will be joined in the epic adventure by a team of supporters including TV presenter Charlie Webster and ex-Rugby League professionals Keith Senior and Paul Highton as they journey from London's Olympic Stadium to the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. Setting off on June 27th and cycling some 90 miles a day over six weeks, the team aim to arrive in time for the Rio Olympics Opening Ceremony on 4th August. The challenge marks the 10th anniversary of Jane's remarkable Ride Across America, which was to be her final challenge before her untimely death from cancer aged just 43. Jane made headlines across the world by taking in a series of epic challenges from marathons to Ironman to cycling from Rome to Home. Her Ride Across America was to be her most ambitious challenge covering 4,200 miles over 10 weeks of cycling. Throughout the journey, Jane's health was deteriorating and whilst battling the heat she was also contending with a broken pelvis. Somehow she still found the courage to complete the distance. Mike Tomlinson said: "On the 29th June 2006, Jane set off to cycle across the USA at a time when she knew her cancer was aggressive and in its final stage. Her success was testament to her incredible mental strength. "The Appeal, and we as a family, wanted to mark this milestone in a special way. As Jane was an ambassador for the 2012 London Olympics bid, it seemed appropriate to celebrate her life by cycling to Rio. "Hopefully, the challenge will help us raise some money, but we also hope that by reminding people about Jane's journey, it will inspire other people – and show just what can be possible with courage and determination." The team – joined by supporters at sections along the way - will pedal from London's Olympic Stadium to Portsmouth. After landing in Le Havre in France, they will then take on 1,231 miles of testing terrain to Lisbon. From Lisbon, the team flies to Recife in the north east of Brazil before venturing along the 1,600 mile coast road to Rio de Janeiro. Charlie Webster said: "Jane showed complete determination and courage throughout her diagnosis and if I can have an ounce of that courage then I know I'll be fine. "It's going to be a long, hot journey, but as a sports fan, the thought of cycling into Rio gives me goose bumps and doing it for such an amazing cause makes it even more special." The challenge aims to raise thousands of pounds for the Appeal to carry on Jane's legacy, supporting children's and cancer services across the country. The money Jane raised on her Ride Across America helped to fund the launch of the Leeds 10K – part of her lasting fundraising legacy – which has brought in more than £4m for charities since her death. The team will be away for the 2016 Leeds 10K on Sunday 10th July, but will run their own 10K on what should be a rest day in Portugal to ensure they are ‘there in spirit'. A share of the money raised from the Rio Challenge will also go to support Rugby League Cares, a dedicated charity supporting the Rugby League family and its local communities. Paul Highton, who plans to pedal the full 3,000 miles, said: "Jane Tomlinson was an inspiration to all of us who care about both life and sport and I feel privileged to be able to help build on her fantastic legacy on the Ride to Rio with Mike, Keith and Charlie. "From a personal point of view I'm looking forward to helping Rugby League Cares, a charity which does so much good for players and everyone else involved in the sport. It's good to be able to put something back into a game that means so much to so many people." Keith, who will join the team for the entire Brazilian leg, said: "I've done a lot of challenges since I retired as a player because like all sportsmen I'm always looking to test myself and this one is the biggest test of all. "It's great to have this opportunity to raise fund for the Jane Tomlinson Appeal, Rugby League Cares and the Sheffield Eagles Include Foundation, of which I'm a trustee. Rugby League Cares does a lot of good work to help players succeed in their life after sport and I'm delighted to be doing the Rio Challenge on their behalf." To support the team go to https://www.justgiving.com/RidetoRio or text JRTR70 £5 to 70070 to donate £5. Weekend preview: March 25-28

Two short work weeks, a four-day weekend: it can only mean that it's Easter! Which also means that there's far too much chocolate around for anyone's wellbeing, you'll find Simnel cake in the better class of tea shop (and, usually, at Hampton Pool's café) and you won't find anywhere open on Sunday that you were expecting to find open because of the wierdest trading laws on the planet... And, probably because the Easter celebrations are relatively 'early' this year (after all, it's the very definition of the term 'moveable feast') AND the clocks go forward an hour to signal the start of British Summer Time (subdued laughter) there's quite a small domestic calendar. Internationally it's even quieter with no top-level events on the ITU's calendar, nothing from the Challenge Family and just one on the WTC's: Ironman 70.3 Taiwan where Paul Amey is on the starting list. The XTERRA World Tour will be racing in Argentina and there are two 'left field' races: the Himalayan Rush and the Nevis to St Kitts Cross Channel Swim (where Jane Hansom, Ironman and Ironman 70.3 medal winner in 2015, will be...) Related Article: Jonathan Hotchkiss wins Ironman 70.3 Taiwan 2010 The weekend starts on Friday with the Radley Triathlon and the Dinton Kids Triathlons but Saturday seems to be event-free. Sunday has much more in the way of choice with triathlons taking place at Ulverston Pool, East Leake, Pwllheli and Bradford for the Great Northern Trail Triathlon. Scotland has its Duathlon Championships at Stirling with races over standard, sprint and Junior distances. The East Leake Triathlon will also represent the triathlon debut of Matt Bottrill, the super-cyclist multiple National TT Champion who has performed so well recently at the Dambuster and Clumber Park Duathlons. We know he can bike (exceptionally). We know he can run (quite well, room for improvement, but still rather well). Let's see how he gets on in the wet stuff! Related Article: Matt Bottrill's Giant Trinity Advanced Pro There are aquathlon options at Durrington Pool for the Avon Aquathlon, Tewkesbury for the third in their series of races and Trowbridge. And, finally, it wouldn't be a Bank Holiday Monday without the Thames Turbo Sprint Series at Hampton Pool! FULL WEEKEND RACE LISTINGS

Roberts, Bartlett: Scottish Duathlon Champs

Fergus Roberts, Nikki Bartlett win 2016 Scottish Duathlon Championships The first of the 2016 season Triathlon Scotland Championships took place today, Easter Sunday, at the long-running Stirling Duathlon. With a prize purse of £1400, and £400 for the winners, the Scottish Championship events are always strongly contested. As well as competing all over Europe and indeed the world, Fraser Cartmell is a regular sight at many of the Scottish Championship events too. We noted previously that in 2014 Fraser won no less than five Scottish Championship titles, over Sprint, Standard and Middle Distance Triathlon, plus Duathlon and Aquathlon. Fraser was back to race in Stirling once again – but would have to settle for the Silver today. Fergus Roberts (RedVenom.co.uk) made his intentions clear early, his 34:57 first run giving him a T1 buffer of around 90 seconds over Cartmell, Brian Mclellan and Neal Robertson. Roberts then further extended his lead over Cartmell on the bike leg, adding a further 50 seconds (1:04:15 to 1:05:05), though the fastest split of the day (1:03:50) would come from Ewan Taylor, who would go on the take the Bronze medal. While in no danger from behind with just the final 5km run remaining, Roberts added the fastest run split once again for a clear victor margin. Cartmell pulled clear of the fast riding Taylor to take second place. The women’s event was also hotly contested, with pre-race favourites Alice Hector and Nikki Bartlett ready to go head-to-head. Hector won earlier this year at the Israman 113 and has also collected several wins in running events locally since then. Bartlett is a fast improving athlete too, having progressed from her unexpected second place overall (as an Age-Group athlete) at Wimbleball in 2014, adding ETU Age-Group Gold later that season in Paguera and now racing as a professional. Hector took an early lead on the first run, her 39:21 split just over 30 seconds faster than Bartlett. A speedy transition doubled that margin to a one minute lead starting the bike. Bartlett was able to more than overcome that on two wheels however, her winter training focus clearly working well as a 1:08:56 split compared to a 1:12:32 from Hector. Alice would regain a minute through T2 and the final 5km run, but it wasn’t enough, and Bartlett would take the title just over a minute and a half clear of the 2013 World Age-Group Sprint Triathlon Champion. Claire Coey took the Bronze, which included a strong 1:12:00 bike leg. Scottish Duathlon Championships, Stirling – Sunday 27th March 2016 10km / 42km / 5km MEN 1st – Fergus Roberts (RedVenom.co.uk) – 1:57:57 2nd – Fraser Cartmell (Stirling Triathlon / Pewag Racing) – 2:01:23 3rd – Ewan Taylor (Velocity 44 Stirling) – 2:02:43 WOMEN 1st - Nikki Bartlett – 2:10:58 2nd – Alice Hector (EVO Tri Club) – 2:12:35 3rd – Claire Coey (Fusion Triathlon Club) – 2:16:57
