Christmas Ideas: Bonk

0
0
Earlier this year we featured the newly launched range of fashion/casual items aimed at triathletes from Bonk (www.bonktriathlon.com), who have 'Live To Train' as their tag line. Well, since then the nice guys at Bonk have sent us a few samples through to trial, very nice they are too, and fine Christmas presents they would make if you are still struggling for ideas. Their core lines are top quality fitted t-shirts and hooded sweatshirts, in various colours, styles and with a variety of subtle and not-so-subtle slogans. So, if "I will not bonk" splashed across your chest is a little too much for your tastes, you can choose something a little less attention grabbing. Now, I could attempt (I won't, I'm not 'fashion qualified'!) to give you an in depth analysis of their fabrics and cuts, and I'm certainly not going to suggest that a Bonk hoody is faster or more aerodynamic than any other... but, from our small sample of hoodies and t-shirts, they are highly recommended and very well put together. I've certainly been wearing my Bonk Icon zip hoodie regularly as you can see here, while Mrs. Editor regulalry sports the "I am a Triathlete" version. So, what is the connection between Bonk and triathlon? That is actually quite clever, and very subtle. Check out the Bonk logo below: See it? No, I didn't grasp it at first either - but the 'dot-dash' lines under the letter B... are representative of the the swim / bike / run disciplines, specifically, the time taken in each discipline within a race, hence a small 'swim dot', large 'bike dash' and medium 'run dash', reflecting that the bike leg makes up the majority of the race. So, now you know! Further cementing their triathlon roots - and perhaps providing a further reason to support the brand - Bonk supply and support a significant number of athletes and coaches at the grass roots of the sport in the UK, further cementing their roots and commitment to triathlon. Check out the Bonk website for their full range, pricing and to order. www.bonktriathlon.com

The Outdoor Show ticket giveaway

We are now in December, and with that the last thing on everyone's mind is 'what races am I going to do next year?'. Training is probably winding down for the colder, shorter days as you prepare for the 25th December. But as soon as the turkey has been carved and the Queens speech watched, most athletes will start to then think about their 2013 race calendar. We all tend to over indulge at Christmas to balance this guilt we plan our training and races. With this in mind Challenge-X (which we previewed HERE) has got five pairs of tickets to give away to The Outdoor Show, for the first five entries in January. A little extra incentive to get your entry in early and take advantage of the reduced early bird entry fee. The Outdoor Show, being held at Excel, London 17th -20th January, is the UK's number 1 show for outdoor enthusiasts, whether you're interested in MTB, cycling, trail running and anything outdoors! Challenge-X a new adventure race for the 2013 race calendar includes a 20km trail run and 65km MTB around the stunning and wild landscape of Dartmoor. After a good night's sleep, competitors will then tackle the formidable Royal Marine Commando Endurance Course over 15km, totalling 100km. This adventure race challenge can be done as part of a relay team, so you just need to find a friend or two to help you complete the challenge. Or if you are feeling up to it, tackle the charity challenge solo. As a registered charity, all the proceeds from the Challenge-X are being donated to help injured Royal Marines, who, during the war in Afghanistan have suffered the largest number of casualties of all the UK Armed Forces. Entries are now open at www.challenge-x.org. The event takes place Saturday 10th - Sunday 11th August 2013.

Super-Xtri announced for 2013

Here's a great new addition to the 2013 calendar, something completely new. Paul Davies, Series Head of the Scott XTri Series (see our dedicated section HERE) introduces the very first Super-Xtri, which will take place at the Cycle Show, NEC, Birmingham next September. Off-road triathlon racing - but not as you've known it! Something new for 28th-29th September 2013: Super-Xtri What a season it's been for off-road racing. With events appearing all over the UK, Javier Gomez winning in Maui and our own Tim Don coming in 8th - the ITU boys have finally seen the muddy side and the fun it brings. As for the ladies - star performer of course has been Lesley Paterson, winning the XTERRA World Champs for the second consecutive year while adding the ITU Cross Triathlon World title too. Jacqui Slack has been in awesome form as well, winning on the XTERRA circuit and taking a fine fifth place in Maui. I'm happy to announce that the profile is about to go up again with the introduction of a super-race, something not done before and different to the norm but exciting beyond belief! For 2013, in addition to the seven Xtri Series races already announced we are having a standalone end of season blow out race..... How does a 200m swim, 3km purpose built MTB course and a 1km run sound? What about doing it multiple times... don't worry though as they won't be one after the other, we'll give you something to do in between - you'll be able to walk around the Cycle Show in the NEC between your speed runs !!!. Ladies and Gentlemen, we give you... Super-Xtri We've managed to not only have a race on the grounds of the NEC but the finish will actually be within the Cycle Show itself. Expect some TT runs, race your mates and Eliminator competition. We're putting together a high class Pro field, I've already got some top MTB'ers having a look as the well - can they beat off-road or road triathletes? There were 26,000 visitors to the show last year and we've got races going on the Saturday and Sunday throughout the day. We'll be having film crews there to capture those moments when you go into the hall to cheers, music, commentators - the buzz will be massive. The top Age Group racers in the TT will progress through to the Eliminators alongside the Pro's - there's a target if you needed one! Age Group winners from the UK wide Xtri Series will win a free place in the season closing NEC Super-Xtri - another great reason to get entered into the series and enjoy some great off-road racing right across the country. Don't forget to check out all of the Xtri series races on the main website (www.xtriseries.co.uk) and Facebook page. Entries will be opening in the next couple of days and as another bonus we'll give you a Scott Backpack if you enter 4 races or more The Super-Xtri website (www.super-xtri.com) will be up and running shortly - entries will open soon and you can become part of an amazing event. In the meantime, keep your eyes peeled at www.xtriseries.co.uk for the details of the UK series and get entering very soon. See you all at the Xtri Series races and the NEC Cycle Show for the Super-Xtri!!!

Human Race Festival of Sport to take a break in 2013

Event organisers, Human Race, have today announced that the Human Race Festival of Sport will not take place in 2013. The event, which debuted in September 2012, was a weekend of mass participation sport and live music set on the beach front of Marazion, Cornwall; welcoming over 4,500 participants and visitors. Despite such an impressive attendance at the event and resoundingly positive feedback from participants and media alike, Human Race have sadly come to the conclusion not to stage the event in Cornwall in 2013. This has not been an easy decision as we have thoroughly enjoyed developing the concept over the last eighteen months and working to deliver what is in this market a unique event. The iconic setting and wonderful landscape of West Cornwall provided us with something truly special and we are very disappointed not to be returning in 2013. The long-running event company boasts the UK's largest and most diverse event portfolio with over 50 events in Triathlon, Open Water Swimming, Running, Cycling, Off-Road Duathlon and Trails Runs, Women-Only and Kids events. Amongst the portfolio are the Toshiba Windsor Triathlon and Wiggle Dragon Ride both hugely prestigious events in the Triathlon and Cycling calendars respectively. Human Race are set to launch further iconic and innovative events in early 2013 as well as developing all aspects of their current events to provide market leading event experiences for all participants. Nick Rusling, CEO of Human Race said, "The Human Race Festival of Sport was one of the most spectacular events we have delivered in our history and the decision to pause the event for 2013 was taken with a very heavy heart. However, there is a lot to look forward to in the near future and we are excited about several announcements that we will be able to make early next year."

JD PRO store opened by Jonathan Edwards

Thinking back to my since mostly forgotten economics lectures at University, I have a vague recollection of the concept of flight to quality. When money is tight, of course, people want a bargain - which is why Poundland dominates most high streets currently. But, at the other end of the scale, people also want to get value for the voluntary spend that they do make, and want the quality to go with it. Thus, they will spend money, but choose to do it wisely in return for a quality product and experience for their scarce disposable income. Thus, certain 'premium' products can benefit in times of recession. That would seem to apply to sport. Last week we brought you news of the new high-tech Sweatshop Concept store in Trump Street, Cheapside, London and thinking back a couple of years to the launch of the new Sigma Sport shop in Kingston, there is evidence that businesses still believe that a top quality, retail experience and environment has merit even when the economic environment appears gloomy and online selling has become the norm. Here we present another new sporting addition, with the opening of the JD Pro store in Bow Lane, London. JD's 'Pro' brand specialises in performance wear for sport, and we visited the store opening and chatted to Olympic Games Triple Jump champion Jonathan Edwards. Check out our videos from the evening below. Former Olympic Triple Jump Champion Jonathan Edwards was guest of honour at the official opening of the new JD Pro store in London last week. The event, which was held at the new JD Pro store on Bow Lane, also launched the 2013 partnership between JD Pro and Olympic Legacy Charity sported. (www.sported.org.uk) JD Pro Store - Video Montage Jonathan, an ambassador for sported. was given an introduction to JD Pro and a tour of the London flagship store, which specialises in performance sportswear, and was on-hand to speak to guests about the London Olympics, his past success and his new love for cycling. Jonathan Edwards chats to Run247.com Commenting on JD Pro and the partnership with sported. Jonathan said: “I'm delighted to be working with sported. to help raise the profile of sport and the positive impact it can have on young people. It's fantastic that JD Pro recognise the part that sport can have in turning young lives around and we're excited to be working together during 2013 to inspire more young people to get involved.” Jonathan Edwards introduces Sported. Throughout the year JD Pro, a division of JD Sports Fashion PLC, will be working with sported. and looking at ways to help inspire young people in the UK through sport. Head of JD Pro Tom Knight said: “We are looking forward to working with sported. to help deliver the Olympic legacy promise in the UK and one of the best ways to do this is to reach young people at a local level and inspire them through sport. JD Pro specialises in performance wear for sport so we are keen to get involved at a local level to transform the lives of disadvantaged young people in London by supporting the fantastic work done by sported.” sported. Founder Sir Keith Mills said: “We are grateful to JD Pro for agreeing to support us in 2013. sported. was established as a direct result of the legacy promises which both myself and Lord Seb Coe made in Singapore seven years ago and I am delighted that we are now the largest legacy charity of the London 2012 Games. We now support over 2,000 community and grass roots sports organisations across the UK, all of whom are helping to change the lives of disadvantaged young people through sport. Partnering with major brands like JD Pro will ensure that we can continue to build on this important work and help to change more young people's lives.”

Weekend preview: December 15-16

It's getting pretty hard to find anything to preview between now and the end of the year! The last gasp of the Ironman 70.3 circuit happens this weekend in Canberra and two GB Pro athletes are listed: Roger Witz Barnes and Jacqui Slack. Roger was a Gold medal winner at the Age Group World Champs in Auckland in October, so should have decent late season form - assuming of course the start list is correct, and he is indeed racing! Jacqui Slack might well win the award for 'most raced' athlete of the season, as she seems to have been racing consistently from the very start of the year - her best yet - with several wins and a fifth placed finish at the XTERRA World Champs in Maui. Jacqui was 11th at the Shepparton 70.3 last month, quite some way off the pace of the leaders - which may well be reflective of the need for a break! As she said at the time "one race too many I think". Fingers crossed she's had a chance to regroup for this one. The field is a mostly domestic affair, though it does list last weeks winner over the full distance at Busso, Jimmy Johnsen (DEN) - if indeed he starts that is! The 'Tim's' Reed and Berkel are likely to feature towards the pointy end of the men's race. Michelle Wu, Kate Bevilaqua and Rebekah Keat (another Busso Iornman racer), are the headline names in the ladies field. The domestic calendar had originally listed the Worcester Winter Aquathlon but this was actually cancelled a while back and the update had never filtered through, apologies for that. Traditionally Team Outrageous hold an open water race on Christmas Day, there's nothing on their website but as soon as that's confirmed we'll let you know. The Winter Gut Buster offers 10 mile and 10k runs at Butlers Lands Farm near Reading on Sunday 30th for those trying to shake off a bit of the pudding and you'll find a few more runs listed on Run247's calendar. And that's pretty much it for the year! No domestic multisport events that we have been able to track down (please let us know if we missed something!) and with the Leybourne Lake Christmas Triathlon still unconfirmed this might well be last event report until 2013... probably! The Ironman 70.3 calendar for 2012 finally came to a close in Canberra. No live reporting from the race but Tim Reed took the overall win with Annabel Luxford (who we're pretty sure wasn't even on the start list we reviewed) topping the women's podium. Fortune failed to smile on the startlisted British Pros: Roger Witz-Barnes didn't start the run while Jacqui Slack seems to have been a DNS although her partner, Ben Allen, finished in ninth. Full results are on the WTC's website HERE. Challenge Family adds Taiwan

Canada (Penticton), Italy (Rimini), Spain (Vitoria), Thailand and now Taiwan (Taitung) - one thing you can't accuse the Challenge Family of triathlons of is lack of ambition. That's five new venues added to their annual roster in less than four months. Will there be more to follow? Will any of the existing races fall away to make room? Whatever the outcome, interesting times for sure. Challenge Family today announced two new additions to its Asian race schedule. Challenge Taiwan and Challenge Half Taiwan are the latest additions to the Challenge Family with the inaugural events taking place on 4 May 2013. Taking place in Taiwan's stunning tropical east coast in and around Taitung, Challenge Taiwan marks Challenge Family's first full distance in Asia and second half distance following the announcement of Challenge Laguna Phuket earlier this moth. Taitung is famous for its hot springs and surfing as well as spectacular coastline and mountains and its scenic beauty has earned it the name of ‘garden of Taiwan'. The Challenge Taiwan course reflects the many reasons why Taitung is fast becoming the Taiwanese centre for triathlon and cycling. The two-lap swim takes place in the flowing Lake in Taitung Forest Park followed by an undulating two-lap bike course which heads north between the soaring Carp Mountains and spectacular Pacific Ocean coastline, passing through traditional Taiwan villages along the way. The run combines the cultural heart of Taitung city with the surrounding tranquil rice fields and orchards and vibrant ocean promenade. Both the full distance and half distance races will also feature relay teams to encourage all levels of participation and to all an easier transition for those looking to take on triathlon's ultimate distance. While competing as a relay team member, athletes will still be able to experience the thrill of racing alongside the world's top triathletes such as Australia's Belinda Granger. Granger, who has raced in Asia for many years as well as at Challenge Family races around the world, said the arrival of Challenge Taiwan added a new dimension to racing in Asia for 2013. “I am really looking forward to racing the inaugural Challenge Taiwan next year. With the announcement of Challenge Phuket and now Challenge Taiwan it looks like we are going to have some amazing races to do next year in Asia,” she said. “I have always loved racing in Asia - it really is where my career as a professional triathlete began. Now to finally have the Challenge series here as well is a dream come true.” Kent Wong, Challenge Taiwan race director, said the race was meeting the demand from Taiwan's growing triathlon market. “There is a real need for a quality long distance race, not just in Taiwan but in Asia. Challenge with its strong focus on attention to detail and high caliber of athlete experience is perfectly placed to fill this gap,” he said. “Taiwan's triathlon market is growing rapidly, and the sport is also enjoying significant growth through other key parts of Asia. Our proximity to Hong Kong and ease of access from throughout Asia, combined with the spectacular scenery, great climate and the welcoming hospitality of the Taiwanese makes this the perfect location for Challenge Family's first long distance race in Asia.” “Taitung is the perfect destination to hold Challenge Family's first long distance race in Asia. Its natural beauty is outstanding and combined with its relaxed atmosphere it's the ideal destination for families to enjoy the true Taiwan as well as to deliver an outstanding race,” said Challenge Family CEO, Felix Walchshöfer. “We are delighted to work with our partners Kent Wong and Body Marketing given their long experience in triathlon. We're excited to have such a strong presence in Asia and we look forward to introducing athletes throughout Asia to the unique Challenge Family race experience.” The Challenge Family global series of long distance triathlons is changing the face of long distance racing around the world with its focus on athlete experience. Featuring spectacular courses in iconic destinations, Challenge Family events focus on delivering the race of a lifetime to every athlete, and creating a memorable spectator experience that captures all the excitement and emotion of this inspirational sport. The Challenge Family series currently features 17 events around the world including the world's largest long distance triathlon, Challenge Roth in Germany. Other Challenge Family races take place in Germany, Austria, Canada, UK, France, Spain, Italy, Denmark, New Zealand, Thailand and now Taiwan Entries to Challenge Taiwan open today, 17 December at www.challenge-taiwan.com. Triathlon England gets funding boost

Triathlon England is today pleased and heartened to receive the news from Sport England that its plan proactively to support the growth of triathlon in England over the next four years has been supported. The Sport England award of £7.5m over the next four years represents an increase of 60% in funding. Looking to build on the sport's ever-growing popularity, Triathlon England submitted a highly ambitious plan aimed at ensuring that the growth of triathlon continues apace from 2013 to 2017. The plan, developed by the Triathlon England Management Board and Triathlon England staff following a lengthy consultation process across the sport, will help clubs and event organisers continue to work hard to progress the quality of the triathlon offer in England. It also includes new initiatives, which will improve access to triathlon and help new people get involved. Jem Lawson, Chair of Triathlon England said: "We are enormously encouraged with the good news from Sport England. This is a reflection of the excellent work put in on behalf of the triathlon community in England, and also a measure of the complementary nature of the aspirations of both Triathlon England and Sport England to create a sporting habit for life through enabling excellence and delivering the opportunities for people of all ages and stages to achieve their personal triathlon challenges." On commenting on the award, Mark Barfield, Director of English Operations said: We are all delighted by the announcement from Sport England. We believe triathlon is an engaging, inclusive and dynamic sport with an exciting future and we look forward to working with the sport to continue to deliver triathlon opportunities for all over the next four years. With the on-going support of Sport England, we, at Triathlon England, will ensure that we do all we can to raise our game and deliver against the vote of confidence shown in our sport.” Sport England's Director of Sport, Lisa O'Keefe said: “We have significantly increased our investment in triathlon based on the sport's excellent track record and strong plans for the next four years. “We believe this sport has excellent potential for further growth, among the growing band of people seeking a varied and flexible sport for health and fitness benefits.” Sport England has detailed what their investment will support on www.sportengland.org: A low cost events programme providing triathlon, duathlon and aquathlons to help address perceived cost barriers to getting involved. A major events programme focusing on areas that don't currently have large-scale triathlons, aiming for an exceptional athlete experience in iconic locations. Work to increase the number of triathlon clubs in England and to boost capacity within existing clubs. Partnerships with leisure/gym professionals to deliver informal training networks for triathletes who are not members of a club. Royal Berkshire Festival of Sport

The Royal Berkshire Festival of Sport, Saturday 24th August 2013, takes place exactly one year after the 2012 London Olympic Games and is also only four weeks before the best athletes from around the world descend on London for the ITU World Championships in Hyde Park in September. The venue for the festival is also one of the iconic venues of the games where many British athletes achieved medals. It is very close to London and in the heart of the Thames Valley, at Dorney Lake. The Royal Berkshire Festival of Sport will be one of the largest open water swimming and triathlon events in the South of England next Summer. Together with the adult events there is a large focus on delivering junior and kid’s events, which are a great way to get the whole family into taking part in sport and exercise. It is also a great way to spend time outdoors and possibly raise money for a charity of your choice. There are very few events where kids, youths, juniors and adults can participate on the same day and over the same course. These events will provide an opportunity for everyone from Schools, Colleges, Triathlon Clubs, Swimming Clubs, Running Clubs, Individuals and Companies to take part and be part of this of this great festival of sport. In a week dominated by end of year awards, Great Britain's ITU Under-23 World Champion and Mixed Relay World Championship Gold medal winning team member Non Stanford was recognised on Saturday night with the 'On Camp with Kelly' Athlete of the Year award from Dame Kelly Holmes. A Celebration of Success for 'On Camp with Kelly' To mark nine years of Aviva 'On Camp with Kelly', a special event named A Celebration of Success took place on Saturday 15 December at The Gibson Hall, London with over 160 guests hosted by Dame Kelly and Sybil Ruscoe. Amongst the guests were international athletes past and present including Liz Yelling, Diane Modahl, Zara Hyde Peters, Alison Wyeth, Marilyn Okoro and Tim Hutchings, over 30 members of 'On Camp with Kelly' including Non Stanford, tutors and camp supervisors, parents and coaches. The event was the perfect opportunity to look back and celebrate the highlights of each year since the programme began in 2004 with special entertainment from Britain's Got Talent Star drummer Kieran Gaffney, young dance group The Movement Factory and singing from Marilyn Okoro. The 2012 'On Camp with Kelly' Athlete of the Year Award went to Non Stanford, ITU World Under 23 Champion (watch the race video HERE), she collected the trophy in the presence of her parents and former coach John Griffiths and current triathlon coach Malcolm Brown, who was honoured with the Coach Achievement Award. The Outstanding Achievement Awards went to Hannah England and Laura Weightman for becoming the first two athletes to be selected for an Olympic Games. Four athletes received Excellent Achievement Awards: Jess Coulson, Mitch Goose, Charlotte Purdue and Jen Walsh. Non Stanford said: "The Celebration event was a wonderful occasion and chance to get together after such a big year. I was very surprised to win the Athlete of the Year Award, I had no idea and I was quite overwhelmed really, especially as it is decided by all the 'On Camp with Kelly' athletes. "On Camp with Kelly really helped my progression since I attended the first camp in South Africa, when I was very much the 'baby' of the group. Kelly was certainly the driving force behind my decision to make the transition to triathlon from athletics, after I had so many difficult years between the ages of 16-19 years. I learned so much that helped me get through the tough times. I'm looking forward to building on my achievements next year, with a great team around me, lots of hard work and a little bit of luck to stay injury free." The original aims for 'On Camp with Kelly' have certainly been exceeded with over 80 athletes supported throughout the unique programme, achieving 22 international medals at Commonwealth Games, European and World Championships. Inspirational education camps have taking place in South Africa, Australia, India, Spain, Portugal and Germany and 23 Get-Together and education days including talks from Lord Seb Coe and Dame Kelly's former coach Margo Jennings. Including the annual Aviva London Grand Prix, 18 Invitational 'On Camp with Kelly races have taken place, giving athletes a unique experience to compete at world class athletics meetings. Dame Kelly Holmes said: "It was a fantastic night on Saturday and really brought home to me how far the programme has come since early 2004. My personal goals for the programme brought to life by Aviva's financial backing, have definitely been surpassed with a great team behind me. It was the January prior to the Athens Olympic Games that I started thinking about how I could pass on my knowledge and experience to eight young athletes, by taking them to train in South Africa at the end of the year. "It has been a brilliant and very rewarding journey working with so many talented athletes. The youngest athlete on my first camp in South Africa Non Stanford recently took the ITU World Under 23 Championship title in Auckland, which was a terrific achievement and I was so proud to watch two athletes from 'On Camp with Kelly' compete at London 2012."

British Triathlon gets funding boost for Rio

Following the participation funding increase news for Triathlon England released on Monday from Sport England, today UK Sport has announced the performance programme funding figures for Olympic sports for the four year cycle leading to Rio 2016. A small increase on the funding levels for London 2012 (to £5.5m), plus £2.16m for paratriathlon should be considered good news, given the cuts suffered by Swimming and Volleyball for example, while Basketball, Table Tennis and Wrestling are among the sports that have had their support removed completely. British Triathlon support for Rio confirmed by UK Sport UK Sport has confirmed their funding programme to British Triathlon for the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games today (Tuesday 18 December 2012). British Triathlon has already begun preparations with the recent appointments of a new Performance Director and Head Coach. The UK Sport award of £5.5m for Olympic preparation and delivery as well as £2.16m for the new paratriathlon programme will ensure that Britain can build on the high level of performance set by the sport in London 2012 when British triathletes won two of the six medals on offer, including gold in the men’s race. Paratriathlon looks set to become the next big success story with five athletes crowned world champions in their category in Auckland this October. The UK Sport award for the Rio 2016 Olympic triathlon programme shows a small increase (4%) on the exceptional funding levels of the London cycle, and is based on the performance funding model that recognises the athletes that are already identified on the Rio pathway, with scope for additional investment for athletes identified over the cycle. Dr Sarah Springman CBE, President of British Triathlon said: “British Triathlon is absolutely delighted about the award for paratriathlon that reflects our enormous potential for Rio 2016 after our paratriathletes won over 40% of the gold medals in the 2012 ITU Paratriathlon World Championships in Auckland and given that the ITU is still working with the IPC on the number of categories and how they will be classified. “We acknowledge with thanks to UK Sport, at this time of austerity and refocusing priorities after a home Olympic Games, the continued substantial Lottery support for our Olympic programme. I am personally disappointed that the Olympic Award focuses on maintaining our position; we believe we can stretch our performance given the opportunity to introduce programme innovation that we could not afford to implement before which would help to maintain our potential for repeat performances in Rio. We hope that if the triathlon mixed relay is added to the Olympic programme that there will be an opportunity for programme review based on the increase in medal potential.” After being notified by UK Sport, Zara Hyde Peters OBE, Chief Executive of British Triathlon said: “UK Sport has been a consistent partner to triathlon in delivering on our performance aspirations, and they have demonstrated that support again. The guidelines for funding were clearly laid out and this award recognises the success delivered in a challenging sport, and backs us for success in our new Paralympic journey. When taken alongside the substantial increase in English talent funding that Sport England has just confirmed for our sport, this investment will contribute to ensuring we can maintain this success in future Olympic and Paralympic cycles.” More information can be found on www.uksport.gov.uk

British Triathlon is pleased to announce the 2013 British Triathlon Inter Regional Championships are set to take place on Saturday 31 August at London 2012 Olympic venue, Eton Dorney. The much anticipated event will see young triathletes from triathlonscotland, Welsh Triathlon and each of the Triathlon England regions compete not only for individual honours but also for the coveted team title. This year’s event will increase the number of Tri Star 2 athletes racing per region with three boys and three girls being able to compete. The same number of athletes will be able to compete in the Tri Star 3 category, creating a team of 12 athletes in total. The 2013 event will not include a youth category following recommendations in the 2011 British Triathlon Competition Review; however, Eton Dorney will also host an elite youth and junior race, which will be included in the 2013 British Triathlon Youth and Junior Super Series. The junior race will also double an ETU Junior European Cup event, bringing Europe’s top junior athletes over to Great Britain in advance of the ITU Junior Triathlon World Championships set to take place in London as part of the 2013 ITU World Triathlon Grand Final in September. Sophie Coldwell was looking forward to the event commenting: “It’s great to see this event will include a European Cup, it really helps us as athletes get that important race practice against an international field, especially in advance of the World Championships on home soil later in the year.” Ian Braid, British Triathlon Director for Major and National Events added: “The 2013 British Triathlon Inter Regional Championships will be more exciting than ever for our Home Nations. The athletes and their supporters will be able see at first hand the next stage in their development with the inclusion of elite youth and junior races in the programme - the latter holding ETU Junior European Cup status. It will be a great day at Eton Dorney.” Entry details will be posted on www.britishtriathlon.org in the New Year.

December training: what should I be doing?

The 2012 season has gone, the 2013 season seems a long way off... so what should you be doing right now to be ready for it? It's cold outside and motivation might be a little low as Christmas approaches, so we asked the guys at Triathlon Performance Solutions (www.triathlonperformancesolutions.com) to help answer the question "what should I be doing and planning in December"? Here are the thoughts and suggestions of Triathlon Performance Solutions coaches Ben Bright, Nick Saunders and Andy Brodziak to get your December training and preparation in order to set you up for a successful new year. Upcoming season planning and review of past season Where have you been, where to you want to go and how are you going to get there? Here's a seven step process to learning from the past year and preparing for the new one. Step 1: Reflection Looking back on the year and evaluating what worked, what didn't work and the reasons why.  Step 2: Goal Setting Using what you've discovered after reflection, decide on up to three major goals for the season coming. Your goals should be specific to you and realistic. Speak to a coach or an experienced friend if you're unsure or need help here..  Step 3: Action the Analysis Look at your goals and assess what will specifically be required to achieve them. Looking back at past race results will give a clear insight into what you'll need to do.  Step 4: Strengths and Weaknesses Based on your analysis you can now compare your own abilities with what your goals will require you to do. Doing this will define your strengths and weaknesses and give you a focus for your preparations.  Step 5: Process Goals and Races Along the way it's a good idea to have milestones and markers to ensure you're on track. Putting in some specific test sessions and races as you build up to your goal(s) also breaks up the monotony of training and gives you the chance to test equipment and race strategies.  Step 6: Race Calendar Put all of the above into a calendar so you can see how your year is structured. Be careful there is not too much nor too little in there. During the season a race (either a tri or a single sports event) every 4-6 weeks is a good period of time between events.  Step 7: Periodisation and Focus of Training Break your year up into specific periods of focus and add this to your calendar. This ensures you spend time focussing on particular aspects of technique and physical preparation and don't just keep training and the same intensity every session, all through the year.  Remember the 6 P's: prior preparation and planning prevents poor performance! Testing December is a good time to get an idea of what your fitness levels are. Do this by doing some basic field tests or speak to your coach to establish the best way to do this. At Triathlon Performance Solutions we have basic field tests for both the bike and run disciplines. For the swim we do either a critical speed swim test or a time trial over different distances depending on your race distance. We do these tests to establish your aerobic and anaerobic thresholds and then set training zones corresponding to those thresholds. Training zones highlight the different points during exercise where your body switches between using only the aerobic system, a mix of the aerobic and anaerobic systems and then only the anaerobic system as well as the production and clearance of lactic acid. By identifying and then working on your specific zones and weaknesses in training you will have a more specific training plan and avoid training at the same intensity too often. Increasing Max Aerobic Power on the Bike Instead of doing loads of junk miles outside in the freezing cold, this is a brilliant time to do a block of power specific training on the bike. Your maximal aerobic power (MAP) is the highest power you can sustain for around 6min, give or take 2min either side. It can be a limiting factor to your bike split, no matter if you are racing Sprint or Ironman. If your Threshold power (maximum you can hold for around 45-60min) is too close to your MAP then it's very difficult to move your Threshold power much higher. By pushing your MAP higher you raise your potential Threshold ‘ceiling'. This has obvious benefits for someone racing sprint to Olympic distance events but it also has big impact for longer distance events. Craig Alexander worked specifically on his MAP after being beaten on the bike in Hawaii 2010. In 2011 he was one of the strongest bikers in the race and ran a pretty decent (!) marathon off it to win. Now is a good time to work on your MAP because it can be done in a short session and it's hard to work on at the same time as working on your endurance. You need to be relatively fresh to get the most out of the session. Example set on turbo: 10min warm up building from and Easy to Tempo intensity 6x30sec with 60sec recovery building each 2 from Threshold to Vo2 intensity 5-6x (3min @ max effort with 2-3min recovery between each effort). Try to keep each effort even and even throughout the set – so your first one is not higher than the rest and there is no big drop off through the set. 10-15min Easy Spinning warm down There you have quality power specific session. Christmas break Now we all need to be flexible during this time due to family commitments and other interruptions typical of this time of year. Pools are closed, bad weather affects training and, let's face it, we want to have a few drinks, indulge ourselves and not feel guilty about missing training. At Triathlon Performance Solutions we use Christmas as a recovery period due to the nature of the interruptions. Training is reduced and we put in a few optional sessions with little or no intensity. Training camps This is a perfect time to sit down with the loved one and bargain a week away to ‘work on your weaknesses' or basically get a week away where you don't have to spend 20 minutes getting dressed with layers, to not have to worry about preparing those healthy post ride recovery meals, sleep when you want and top up your Vitamin D levels. Having been to many venues across the world now, what stands out on all fronts is Playitas resort, Fuerteventura (www.playitas.info). Home to many Pro's this winter, including the British Triathlon squad who are there as we speak, Triathlon Performance Solutions hosts a camp in February ending with the challenging Lighthouse Triathlon, involving a 1.5km sea swim, 35km rolling Bike and a 13km hilly Lighthouse run. Whatever you decide, if you are planning a summer Ironman or perhaps the World Championships in London, a week of some volume and good uninterrupted training with a coach or some colleagues will be worth its weight in gold later in the season. It's a chance to work on aerobic and neural pathways, improve muscular endurance but most importantly set you up for an even better 2013 than you have planned.
